7 Best Shopify Announcement Bar Apps (Free & Paid)

An announcement bar is the strip of text that sits across the top of your store. It is the cheapest piece of real estate you own, and the only one every single visitor sees before they scroll.

Same store, same strip of space, three different jobs: an incentive, a deadline, an expectation.

Here is the thing most roundups will not tell you: your Shopify theme already has one. Dawn ships with an Announcement Bar section, and so do most modern themes. For a lot of stores, that is genuinely all you need, and installing an app would be adding a subscription to solve a problem you do not have.

So this post does two things. First, it helps you work out whether you actually need an app at all. Then, if you do, it compares the seven announcement bar apps worth your time, with real pricing and real review counts pulled from the Shopify App Store.

Do You Even Need an Announcement Bar App?

Start here, because the answer is no more often than you would expect.

Your theme’s built-in bar handles a single message, a link, basic colours, and (in most modern themes) a few rotating announcements. Shopify’s own documentation confirms the constraint: you get one announcement bar section, though you can add up to a dozen announcement blocks inside it.

Stay with your theme if

  • You show one message at a time and change it occasionally
  • The same message is fine on every page
  • You do not need it to start and stop on a schedule
  • You do not need different messages per country
  • Your theme’s styling already looks right

Page-level targeting. Showing a shipping cutoff on product pages but a newsletter prompt on the homepage is not something theme bars do.

Scheduling. If you want a Black Friday bar to appear at midnight and disappear on the 2nd without you setting an alarm, you need an app.

A live free shipping threshold. A bar that reads the customer’s actual cart total and tells them they are $12 away from free shipping is the single feature most likely to pay for itself.

Numbers. Theme bars give you no idea whether anyone clicked. Apps give you impressions, clicks, and sometimes attributed revenue.

If none of those apply, close this tab and go edit your theme. You will have saved yourself a monthly bill.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Shopify Announcement Bar App

If you have decided an app makes sense, these are the things that actually matter once you get past the marketing copy.

Pricing model. Most of these apps do not charge per feature, they charge per impression or per view. A store doing 100,000 monthly sessions will land on a very different plan than one doing 5,000, even with identical needs. Check your traffic before you compare prices, or you will pick the wrong tier.

Storefront performance. Every app adds a script to your storefront. A badly built bar causes layout shift, where the page jumps as the bar loads, which hurts both the customer experience and your Core Web Vitals. Look for the Built for Shopify badge, which Shopify awards for meeting its performance, design, and integration standards.

Setup without code. A good app installs through the theme editor’s app embed panel and has a bar live in a few minutes. If a listing tells you to paste code into your theme files, that is a warning sign.

Mobile control. A message that reads well on desktop often wraps into three ugly lines on a phone. The better apps let you set different text or hide the bar entirely on mobile.

Analytics. Impressions and clicks are the minimum. Revenue attribution, usually via a discount code, is what lets you justify the subscription to yourself.

Support responsiveness. Read the one and two star reviews, not the five star ones. That is where you find out how the developer behaves when something breaks.

1. Attrac Popup, Announcement Bar

Attrac is the most complete option on this list, and the one to look at first if you suspect a bar alone will not be the end of it. It covers announcement bars, banners, popups, upsell and cross sell offers, free shipping progress, countdown timers, and email and SMS signup forms in a single app.

The reason this matters is consolidation. Many stores end up running three separate apps for bars, popups, and free shipping messages, paying three subscriptions and loading three scripts. Attrac replaces all of that. It also carries the Built for Shopify badge and a 5.0 rating across more than a thousand reviews, which is unusual at that volume.

Key features of Attrac:

  • Multiple bar types. Multi announcement bars, countdown timer bars, and free shipping bars, all from the same builder.
  • Popups too. Opt-in popups, discount popups, and exit intent popups, so you are not shopping for a second app later.
  • Embedded banners. Store alerts that sit on product pages and inside the cart drawer, not just at the top of the page.
  • Targeting. Page and domain targeting, device targeting, and audience targeting on the Pro plan and above.
  • Email tool integrations. Works with Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend, Seguno, and PageFly.

Pros

  • Widest feature set of any app here
  • Free plan includes every campaign type
  • Built for Shopify badge
  • Six interface languages

Cons

  • Targeting sits behind the $14.99 tier, scheduling behind $29.99
  • 1,500 free monthly impressions runs out fast on a busy store
  • More app than a store that only wants a simple bar needs

Pricing of Attrac: Free plan with 1,500 monthly impressions. Plus at $8.99/month (10,000 impressions), Pro at $14.99/month (50,000 impressions, adds targeting), and Max at $29.99/month (from 150,000 impressions, adds scheduling and advanced analytics). Annual billing saves between 11% and 33%. Seven day free trial on paid plans.

2. Essential Announcement Bar

Where Attrac spreads wide, Essential Announcement Bar goes deep on one thing: the bar itself. If what you want is a genuinely good looking announcement bar with proper animation options, this is the pick.

It handles four distinct bar styles: a fixed sticky bar, a scrolling marquee where the text moves horizontally, a rotating carousel that cycles through several messages, and a simple static bar. Every one supports a call to action button. It also does something most competitors skip, which is placing bars on the cart page specifically, useful for last-minute shipping or returns messaging.

Key features of Essential Announcement Bar:

  • Four bar styles. Sticky, scrolling marquee, rotating carousel, and static, switchable without rebuilding your campaign.
  • Icon library. A large built-in icon set, plus the ability to upload your own on paid plans.
  • Cart page bars. Dedicated bars for the cart, separate from your storefront-wide announcements.
  • Broad translation support. Nineteen languages supported in the interface.
  • Geolocation targeting. Different messages for different countries from the $9.99 tier.

Pros

  • Cheapest entry point of the paid apps here at $6.99/month
  • 5.0 rating across more than 1,200 reviews
  • Built for Shopify badge
  • Reviewers consistently mention fast, responsive support

Cons

  • Bars only, so you will need a separate app for popups
  • The free plan caps at 2,000 monthly views, which is low
  • More app than a store that only wants a simple bar needs

Pricing of Essential Announcement Bar: Free plan with 2,000 monthly views. Starter at $6.99/month (20,000 views), Essential at $9.99/month (50,000 views, adds scheduling, geolocation, and translations), and Professional at $29.99/month (unlimited views). Annual billing saves 20%. Seven day free trial.

3. Hextom: Quick Announcement Bar

Hextom launched this app in 2015, and that longevity is the reason to consider it. Scroll its reviews and you find merchants who have been running it for six, eight, even ten years. In an app store where products get abandoned regularly, a decade of continuous maintenance is worth something.

It is a straightforward, well-built bar app. Multiple bars in rotation, animation options, background images, scheduling, and targeting by geography, customer, page, product, and device. It also has the largest review count of any dedicated announcement bar app on Shopify, at more than 2,200.

Key features of Hextom: Quick Announcement Bar:

  • Deep targeting. Geo location, customer, page, product, and device targeting all in one place.
  • Advance scheduling. Set a Black Friday bar weeks ahead and let it switch itself on.
  • Multi-bar rotation. Several bars cycling with animation, on the Premium plan.
  • Shopify Markets integration. Geo targeting that respects your Markets configuration.
  • Custom CSS. For when the built-in styling does not go far enough.

Pros

  • Longest track record of any app here
  • Free plan includes device targeting and page targeting, which competitors charge for
  • Built for Shopify badge
  • Support is repeatedly praised in recent reviews

Cons

  • Interface feels dated next to newer apps
  • Scheduling, rotation, and geo targeting all sit behind the paid plan
  • Bars only, no popups

Pricing of Hextom: Quick Announcement Bar: Free Basic plan including a fully customisable bar, device targeting, page targeting, and link or button support. Premium at $9.99/month, or $99/year, adding unlimited active bars, multi-bar rotation, geo targeting with Shopify Markets, background images, scheduling, and custom CSS. Seven day free trial.

4. TA Banner Slider, Sales Pop up

TA Banner Slider is worth a look mainly for its free plan, which is unusually generous. Where most apps lock campaign types behind paid tiers, this one gives you every banner and popup type on the free plan and caps you on views instead.

That makes it a good testing ground. You can try announcement bars, discount banners, free shipping bars, email signup bars, countdown timers, and sales popups without paying anything, then decide what you actually use before choosing a plan.

Key features of TA Banner Slider:

  • All types free. Announcement, shipping, discount, signup, and countdown banners plus window and social proof popups, all on the free plan.
  • Cart goal banners. Progressive messages that update as the customer adds items.
  • Cart triggers. Popups that fire on add to cart or cart removal, on the Platinum plan.
  • AI translation. Automatic campaign translation on the top tier.
  • Performance reporting. Views and clicks included even on the free plan.

Pros

  • Most generous free plan on this list in terms of features
  • 5.0 rating across nearly 1,200 reviews
  • Built for Shopify badge
  • Separate Shopify Plus pricing is stated upfront

Cons

  • Only a three day free trial on paid plans, shorter than competitors
  • The interface tries to do a lot and can feel cluttered
  • Multi-banner slider requires the $19.99 tier

Pricing of TA Banner Slider: Free plan with 2,000 monthly views and all banner and popup types. Advanced at $9.99/month (100,000 views, adds scheduling and targeting), Platinum at $19.99/month (500,000 views, adds cart triggers and the multi-banner slider), and Unlimited at $39.99/month. Shopify Plus stores pay higher rates on each tier. Annual billing saves up to 25%.

5. Hextom: Free Shipping Bar

This one does a single job, and it is the job most likely to make you money. Instead of a static message, it shows a progressive bar that reads the customer’s actual cart total and updates as they shop. Add $12 more for free shipping, then, once they qualify, a confirmation that shipping is on the house.

That mechanic works because it gives the customer a specific, achievable target at the exact moment they are deciding whether to add one more item. It is the clearest average order value lever available in a bar, and with nearly 2,800 reviews it is the most-reviewed app on this list.

Key features of Hextom: Free Shipping Bar:

  • Progressive messaging. Three message states: before qualifying, after qualifying, and a general promotional message.
  • Cart-aware. Reads live cart value rather than showing a fixed threshold.
  • Device and page targeting. Included on the free plan.
  • Performance tracking. See what the bar is doing to your order values, on the paid plan.
  • Scheduling. Run threshold promotions for set periods.

Pros

  • Most reviewed app in this category
  • Directly tied to a measurable business outcome
  • Free plan includes device and page targeting
  • Built for Shopify badge

Cons

  • Does one thing only, so it is an addition to your stack rather than a replacement
  • Performance tracking requires the paid plan
  • Overlapping with a general bar app means two subscriptions

Pricing of Hextom: Free Shipping Bar: Free Basic plan including device and page targeting. Premium at $9.99/month adding performance tracking, bar background images, and advanced options.

6. XB: Announcement Bars & Banner

XB is the pick if your budget is zero and your needs are simple. It is completely free, with no paid tier at all, and it covers announcement bars, marquee scrolling text, and carousel banners.

Its review count is small at just over a hundred, which means less proof of long-term reliability than the established options. But it holds a 5.0 rating and carries the Built for Shopify badge, which tells you Shopify has checked it against their performance and integration standards. For a small store that wants a nicer bar than the theme provides and nothing more, that is a reasonable trade.

Key features of XB: Announcement Bars & Banner:

  • Marquee bars. Scrolling text without paying for a tier upgrade.
  • Carousel banners. Multiple messages cycling automatically.
  • No usage caps. No impression or view limits to worry about.
  • Built for Shopify. Meets Shopify’s own performance and design standards.

Pros

  • Widest feature set of any app here
  • Free plan includes every campaign type
  • Built for Shopify badge
  • Same developer offers matching free apps for sticky cart and free shipping

Cons

  • Small review base, so less long-term track record
  • No analytics to speak of
  • Free apps can be discontinued with little warning

Pricing of XB: Announcement Bars & Banner: Completely free.

7. GSC Countdown Timer Bar

If your bar needs to count down, this is the specialist. GSC Countdown Timer Bar puts a live timer in the bar itself for flash sales, shipping cutoffs, and limited-time offers, and it is free.

Countdown bars work differently from announcement bars. A static message is information, but a ticking clock is pressure, and it converts differently. Used sparingly on genuine deadlines it is effective. Used permanently on a sale that never ends, customers see through it fast, and you will do more damage to trust than the extra orders are worth.

Key features of GSC Countdown Timer Bar:

  • Live countdown in the bar. Timer visible at the top of every page.
  • Flash sale focus. Purpose-built for time-limited promotions.
  • Free with no tiers. No impression caps or upgrade prompts.
  • Built for Shopify. Meets Shopify’s performance and design standards.

Pros

  • Free, from an established developer (GetSiteControl)
  • More than 500 reviews at a 4.9 rating
  • Built for Shopify badge
  • Pairs well with a separate general bar app

Cons

  • Countdown only, not a general purpose announcement bar
  • Limited design flexibility compared to paid alternatives
  • Easy to overuse and erode customer trust

Pricing of GSC Countdown Timer Bar: Completely free.

Which One Should You Pick?

  • If you want one app to cover bars, popups, and free shipping: Attrac.
  • If you want the best bar and nothing else: Essential Announcement Bar, and it is the cheapest paid option at $6.99.
  • If longevity and a proven track record matter most: Hextom: Quick Announcement Bar.
  • If you want to test everything before paying: TA Banner Slider’s free plan.
  • If raising average order value is the goal: Hextom: Free Shipping Bar.
  • If you want to spend nothing: XB for general bars, GSC for countdowns.
  • If your theme’s bar already does what you need: none of them. Save the money.

Closing Up!

The honest summary is that announcement bar apps are a commodity. Most of them do broadly the same things, most of them do it well, and the differences that matter are pricing model, whether they cover the campaign types you will want in six months, and how the developer behaves when you email them.

So do not agonise over the choice. Pick the one whose free plan matches what you need, install it, and give it a fortnight. All seven are free to try, and switching costs you nothing but an afternoon.

What matters far more than which app you install is what the bar says. A bar that reads “Welcome to our store” is decoration. A bar that reads “Free shipping on orders over $50, you are $12 away” is a sales tool. Get the message right first, then worry about the software.
